Fort Desoto
If you are looking to immerse yourself in history, a visit to Fort Desoto is a must on your to do list. Named for the famous Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, construction of the fort is said to have begun in 1899 and it became an active military outpost in 1900. A visit to Fort Desoto also gives you a chance to work in some beach time as well. Recently voted the number #1 beach in America by Trip Advisor's online travel community, making it the second year in a row the area has been bestowed this honor, the area offers an abundance of winding trails, perfect for biking or walking, alongside some of the most beautiful beach fronts you will ever see.
Downtown St. Petersburg
While not necessarily a singular attraction, the quaint St. Petersburg streets downtown offer one of the largest concentrations of antique shops in Florida. Ranging in size from tiny storefronts, featuring shelves crammed with priceless treasures, to massive establishments, filled wall to wall with antique furniture, art, clothing, and jewelry, downtown St. Petersburg offers full access to nearly any vintage item you could possible hope to find.
Dali Museum
Last, but definitely not least, no visit to St. Petersburg is complete without a visit to the renowned Salvador Dali Museum. Dedicated to one of the most intriguing surrealist painters of all time, the museum offers an incredible selection of some of Dali's most famous paintings. The museum offers the second largest collection of Dali's works in existence, displaying over 1,500 pieces in its recently renovated halls. All of the works on exhibit came from the personal collection of Albert and Eleanor Morse.
